Nayeli Cabrera, BFA

After a lifetime of constant movement—having relocated 24 times and never truly settling—I found a home in San Luis Valley, Colorado. My art exhibition, Roots in Motion: Settling in the San Luis Valley, is a reflection of this transformative period in my life. These paintings embody the process of putting down roots and embracing the beauty and culture of my new surroundings.

For the first time, I explored the practice of plein air painting, which allowed me to experience nature and creativity in a fresh way. This technique helped me capture the essence of my surroundings while also revealing new aspects of myself as an artist and person. I am aware that for locals, these landscapes and places may feel familiar, but for someone like me, they are a newly discovered experience, filled with wonder and appreciation.

The work in this collection celebrates the simple joys of settling down after years of uncertainty, hardship, and personal growth. Following the pandemic and a series of challenging life events, this period has been one of happiness and renewal. I have stopped merely surviving and started truly living, and these paintings are a testament to the deep sense of peace, discovery, and joy I have found in San Luis Valley. Each piece represents a moment of connection to this place, and to the person I am becoming here.

With every painting, I attempt to claim the place on which it is based as my own, hoping that someday I might leave my own mark on the history of this valley, just as it has left a mark on me.
